The many routes to Mexico

Listen to the stories of migrants from Asia and Africa as they cross the perilous Darien Gap, en route to Mexico. Published by Periodistas de a Pie.

This interactive graphic camr out of a reporting project from the Mexican border city of Tapachula, Mexico. There, asylum seekers and other migrants from around the world converged after unimaginably circuitous routes through airports, jungles, backroads and prisons, at each point escaping or falling into the arms of traffickers. Parts of Tapachula had a strange cosmopolitan feel, where hole-in-the-wall restaurants offered curry and other dishes from home, and bleary-eyed Africans and Asians wandered the streets, waiting for a travel permit or money from home. We spoke to several about the routes they had taken to get there, as they prepared for the final push across Mexico to the US border.
