Especies en Peligro

A Spanish-language course about endangered species aimed at community journalists and environmentalists in the Caribbean.

This Spanish-language course seeks to promote an understanding of which species are threatened in the Greater Caribbean region, the nature of the threats, and what communities can do to reduce them. It introduces learners to a number of online data sources, including the IUCN's Red List of Endangered Species, the open-source Encyclopedia of Life, various national surveys of endangered species, and the database of the UN-affiliated Protocol Concerning Specially Protected Areas and Wildlife for the Wider Caribbean Region (SPAW-RAC).

Learners are taught to research species data, such as habitat, threats and population trends, and communicate their findings to local audiences. The course includes a number of digital innovations, such as a searchable card catalogue of SPAW-RAC species, and an animated interactive map tour of the Greater Caribbean's species.

The course also teaches learners about interconnections among the different habitats in the region: the movement of sea turtles in and out of the region, for example, the migration of birds across the region, and how pollution and over-fishing in one place affect others within the region. The course is aimed at journalists and environmentalists concerned with local issues in small coastal communities. It is hoped that the material enables a broader vision and interchange of experiences.
